Early Career Researcher Competition

Manon Sabot is pictured receiving her certificate at the end of the week with GEWEX Scientific Steering Group Co-Chairs Jan Polcher and Xubin Zeng

Congratulations to the winners of the ECR competition! The three winners are:

Manon Sabot: Challenges and Opportunities in Building a Global Model of Plant Hydraulics
Kristen Whitney: Quantifying Drought Propagation Typology through Remote Sensing and Data Assimilation
Daisuke Takasuka: Characteristics of Precipitating Convection and Moisture-Convection Relationships in Global Km-Scale Simulations

In collaboration with the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), GEWEX organized a competition for Early Career Researchers (ECRs) during the 9th GEWEX Open Science Conference. Competitors had to meet the criteria of being either an undergraduate or postgraduate (Masters/PhD) student or a scientist who has received their highest degree (BSc, MSc, or PhD) within the past six years. If parental leave fell in this period, up to one year of parental leave time may be added per child, up to a maximum of four years.

Oral and poster presentations that were entered in the ECR competition were evaluated by fellow participants of the GEWEX OSC who were not participating in the competition themselves. Poster and oral presentations were judged on technical content, technical knowledge of the topic, and presentation delivery.

To ensure a robust evaluation, we strived for at least three evaluations for each presentation. An independent committee consisting of representatives from the ECR and Program Committees reviewed the numerical ratings and comments from the evaluations to produce a summary of the rankings. The ECR Committee then selected the top three presentations from ECRs among the many excellent talks and posters. Prizes were awarded to winners at the end of the conference.
