UMAP 2022 has organized three competitions for Early Career Researchers (ECRs). You are deemed an ECR if you are an undergraduate or postgraduate (Masters/PhD) student or a scientist who has received his or her highest degree (BSc, MSc, or PhD) within the past six years. If parental leave fell in this period, up to one year of parental leave time may be added per child, up to a maximum of four years.
In collaboration with the center of Excellence in Simulation of Weather and Climate in Europe (ESiWACE), the GEWEX GASS panel has organized a data analysis competition to encourage the use of the data set of the DYnamics of the Atmospheric general circulation Modeled On Non-hydrostatic Domains (DYAMOND).
As data amounts are substantial and data transfer is impractical, if not impossible, DYAMOND data management is provided by the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) and supported through the projects ESiWACE and ESiWACE2. The projects ESiWACE and ESiWACE2 have received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under grant agreements No 675191 and 823988.
In collaboration with the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the GEWEX GASS panel has organized a competition for ECRs whose studies have used ARM data.
ARM is one of the largest field programs in the world. Over the past three decades, ARM has established several permanent research sites and deployed a number of ARM Mobile Facilities (AMF) in diverse climate regimes around the world to collect long-term continuous field measurements of clouds, aerosols, and radiation and their associated large-scale environments.
These detailed field observations have provided a unique observational basis specifically for understanding aerosol, cloud, radiation, and precipitation-related processes and their interactions and evaluating and improving their representations in climate models particularly through process-level studies.
ARM Observatory Locations
Contributions to the DYAMOND and DOE ARM Competitions must be entered by 3 April 2022 (midnight GMT). We ask for a single plot, accompanied by a page describing the analysis and the result, to be submitted on or before the 3 April 2022 deadline. A scientific review committee consisting of representatives from the GASS panel, the early career scientist network of Young Earth System Scientists (YESS), and ARM will select the winners based on scientific content, originality, and the presentation of results. Notification to participants begins on 21 April 2022. The selected winners will receive prizes in the form of financial support for travel and attendance to the 3rd Pan-GASS Meeting in Monterey, California, USA, from 25-29 July 2022.
In collaboration with the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), the GEWEX GASS panel has organized a competition where poster and oral presentations given during the conference will be judged on technical content, technical knowledge of the topic, and presentation delivery. Prizes will be awarded to winners at the end of the conference.
To ensure a robust evaluation, we strive for three evaluations for each presentation. An independent Awards Committee consisting of representatives from the Conference planning committee and other members of the scientific community will review the numerical ratings and comments from the evaluations and produce a summary of the rankings. The Awards Committee will then select the top presentations from ECRs to be recognized and given a specific award.
