9th Global Energy and Water EXchanges
Open Science Conference

Jul 7 - 12, 2024 | Sapporo, Japan

ECR Workshop July 4–6, 2024,
with Space Agency Event on July 7th
Sapporo, Japan

About

The Young Earth System Scientists (YESS), American Geophysical Union Hydrology Section Student Subcommittee (AGU H3S), and the Japanese Early Career Researcher (ECR) community, with the support of GEWEX and the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), will jointly organize a three-day workshop on Extremes in the water cycle and risks to society: Understanding ‘actionable’ information in hydroclimate research. The meeting will be held between July 4–6, 2024, with a Space Agency Day on July 7, before the 9th GEWEX Open Science Conference (July 7–12, 2024), in Sapporo, Japan.

This will be a working meeting designed to provide feedback for the GEWEX OSC 2024 and to produce a white paper describing the ECR perspective on research challenges and opportunities related to three overarching topics:

  1. Extremes in the water cycle and risks to society
  2. Understanding “actionable” information in hydroclimate research
  3. Emergent issues: AI/ML applications in the water-energy nexus & Climate Intervention in the Water and Energy Cycle

A special half-day session will be dedicated to ECRs exchanging with experts from space agencies towards understanding satellite observations for climate extremes and the water cycle from space. This session will include presentations of technical and operational aspects of the satellite operation and a hands-on lab activity aiming to explore further resources, products, and tools. In addition, there will be space for discussions and considerations of the current status and future professional development and enhancement of career prospects for ECRs.

Selected participants will actively contribute to the success of the workshop outcomes with their expertise. The aim is to design a program that allows for holding breakout sessions that will be stimulated by invited experts’ keynote presentations. The Selection Committee will assign the participants to the relevant discussion topic (see topics listed above), balancing expertise and numbers to help articulate their input and engage all voices towards the workshop outcomes.

Program

The program of the ECR Workshop, including the special Space Agency Event on July 7th, can found here.

Participants

The maximum number of participants is 50 people. The selection process will be run jointly by GEWEX OSC organizers, ECR co-organizing network representatives, and WMO program representatives. The selection criteria will account for gender, geographical, and scientific background balance.

Participants could be included at a later stage, depending on availability and funding possibilities. We would specifically aim to involve more participants from the operational early career community.

Application for the Workshop

To apply for the Early Career Researcher (ECR) Workshop, “Extremes in the water cycle and risks to society: Understanding ‘actionable’ information in hydroclimate research,” you must be an Early Career Researcher (ECR). You are deemed an ECR if you are an undergraduate or postgraduate (Master’s/Ph.D.) student or a scientist who has received his or her highest degree (B.Sc., M.Sc., or Ph.D.) within the past 7 years. If parental leave fell in this period, up to one year of parental leave time may be added per child, up to a maximum of four years.

You need to register for the 2024 GEWEX Science Conference, and during your registration, you will be asked whether you would like to apply for the workshop.

If you are selected for the workshop, you are expected to attend the conference following the workshop, and must have submitted at least one abstract suitable for both. There is a nonrefundable charge for each abstract submitted (with a limit of 2 abstracts total), and the registration fee for the conference applies.

You needed to supply the following to apply:

  • A Curriculum Vitae (CV) of no more than two pages that includes your latest publications and a brief list of conferences and workshops you attended recently
  • A brief paragraph of no more than 600 characters (about 300 words) describing your motivation to attend the workshop
  • An abstract to submit for the GEWEX OSC 2024. We welcome all submissions that relate to research and applications in the fields of water and climate as applicable to the GEWEX OSC 2024 and ECR Workshop themes. For clarification, we welcome contributions from students and practitioners whose submission can outline research ideas, research to operation pathways, and other applications, etc., related to the aforementioned themes.
