Transportation to and in Wellington

By plane

Wellington International Airport has direct connectivity to the rest of New Zealand, Australia, and Fiji, across various airlines. Domestic air services are regular and fast. Flights from Auckland and Christchurch international airports hourly, and travel time is usually an hour.

By ferry or cruise

Wellington is a coastal gateway between the North and South Islands. There are regular ferry services across the Cook Strait to and from Picton. The journey by ferry or cruise ship takes about three-and-a-half-hour journey. You can sail with either Interislander or Bluebridge.

By car

If you are driving, Wellington is connected to two of the country’s major state highways, SH1 and SH2.

By train

The train station is in the centre of the city.

Great Journeys of New Zealand have a regular Northern Explorer train service, which connects Auckland and Wellington. The scenic 648km journey takes one day and includes multiple stops along the way.

If you’re heading to the South Island via ferry, jump on a Coastal Pacific train from Picton to Christchurch.

Getting around in Wellington

Wellington has an extensive public transport system that is well-used by locals. Buses and trains can get you around the city, suburbs, and wider region. 

There is also the East by West Ferry that takes you across Wellington Harbour, from Queen’s Wharf in the city across to Eastbourne in Lower Hutt.

Metlink has an easy-to-use journey planner, getting you from A to B using all of the city’s transport options.

Paying for your journey is easier and more convenient with a Snapper card. They can be purchased from the Wellington isite Visitor Information Centre or various convenience stores. Top up and tap your card on and off each mode of transport.

Exploring Wellington

Wellington, capital of New Zealand, is situated at the southern end of the North Island and nestled between green hills and a sparkling harbour. Wellington offers a mix of culture, history, nature and cuisine. A sample of things to explore in the Wellington region are listed below.

  • Mount Victoria Lookout provides 360 degree views of Wellington City, the harbour and the ocean to the south.. You can drive all the way up, or walk through the nature trails.
  • Wairarapa, one of New Zealand’s premier wine regions. Once here, hire a bike from Green Jersey Cycles in Martinborough to cycle your way around the boutique vineyards. Martinborough wine tours are also available.
  • Lord of the Rings Tour to journey to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth.
  • Wellington Botanic Garden

Visa and other requirements

To travel to New Zealand your passport has to be valid for at least three months beyond your intended departure date. In addition, visitors must apply for a visa unless they hold a passport from a visa waiver country or territory. If the issuing country of your passport is on the list of Visa Waiver Countries and Territories you will need to apply for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA).

If you are traveling on an Australian or New Zealand passport or have a New Zealand citizen endorsement in your passport you will not need a visa or NZeTA.

Code of Conduct

All attendees and participants are expected to conduct themselves with integrity and in a manner that is professional, respectful, tolerant and responsible. A zero-tolerance approach will be applied to any form of discrimination or harassment, including but not limited to sexual harassment and bullying.

Discrimination is any unfair treatment or arbitrary distinction based on a person’s race, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, disability, age, language, social origin or other status. Discrimination may be an isolated event affecting one person or a group of persons similarly situated or may manifest itself through harassment or abuse of authority.

Harassment is any improper and unwelcome conduct that might reasonably be expected or be perceived to cause offense or humiliation to another person because of inter alia, an individual’s gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, ethnicity, national origin, age, or religion. Bullying is unwelcome, aggressive behavior involving the use of influence, threat, intimidation, or coercion to dominate others in the professional environment.’

Harassment or bullying may take the form of words, gestures or actions which tend to annoy, alarm, abuse, demean, intimidate, belittle, humiliate or embarrass another or which create intimidating, hostile or offensive professional environment.

Sexual harassment is a specific type of prohibited conduct. It is any unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature. Sexual harassment may be any conduct of a verbal, including via electronic or telephonic means, nonverbal or physical in nature and may occur between persons of the opposite or same sex.

In the event that a participant of this conference, feels that an issue has arisen regarding disrespectful treatment, harassment bullying or discrimination, regardless of whether it rises to the level of breach of this conduct, the member or event participant is encouraged to discuss it in confidence, with anyone in the list below, as appropriate:

  • The GEWEX SSG co-chairs Xubin Zeng and Jan Polcher.

In the event of a clear or perceived breach of the code of conduct, it may be reported in writing to the Director of the International GEWEX Project Office, or the Chair(s) of the GEWEX SSG. Once this is received, a GEWEX SSG member will be appointed as point of contact, who will first discuss with the complaint on how they wish to proceed.

All reports and allegations of breaches to this code of conduct will be handled sensitively and in confidence. The immediate priority will be to protect the privacy of the person(s) exposed to the breach of conduct and the need for further action will be assessed carefully on a case-by-case basis.
