Orsay, a larger city near Gif-sur-Yvette, is home to one of the biggest universities in France. It offers a variety of accommodations. The RER-B train is a 5 minute ride from Gif-sur-Yvette to Orsay.
Massy-Palaiseau is the large communication hub of the southern Paris metro region and is a 15 minute train ride on the RER-B. It offers a wide choice of hotels from many established chains.
Paris Center offers the widest range of hotels, but you should try to choose one on the southern shores of the Seine. From there you can easily take the Metro to reach the station of Denfert Rochereau, where you can take the RER-B to Gif-sur-Yvette. The travel time from Denfert Rochereau to Gif-sur-Yvette is 40 minutes.
